Motown
The song was written by the Motown songwriting and production team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland. On the track are Diana Ross (lead vocals), Florence Ballard (background vocals), and Mary Wilson (background vocals). The instrumentation was provided by the fabulous Funk Brothers, who were the Motwon session musicians. The song was released as a single in 1964 and on The Supremes’ 1964 album Where Did Our Love Go.
In 1964 and into 1965, the song was an international hit. It went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and U.S. Cash Box Singles, #3 on the U.S. Cash Box R&B Singles, and #25 in the U.K. Soon after Christmas in 1964, The Supremes made their debut appearance and performed “Come See About Me” on The Ed Sullivan Show. They were very successful and eventually appeared 19 more times on the program, which is more than any other pop act. The Supremes also recorded a German version of this song caled “Johnny und Joe.” They included this version on their 1965 album Motown Around the World.
“Come See About Me” has been covered by numerous artists. These include Junior Walker & The All Stars, Neil Sedaka, Martin McBride, Soul Stirrers, Shakin’ Stevens The Afghan Whigs, Freda Payne (whose sister Scherrie Payne became a member of The Supremes in 1973).
