Carla Thomas B A B Y

Carla Thomas BABY

Memphis Soul

The song “B-A-B-Y” was written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter. Carla Thomas recorded it in 1966. It was the first track on her 1966 album titled Carla. It was also released as a single, and that went to #14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the R&B Chart. The record sold more than one million copies and earned an RIAA gold record.

Carla Thomas was born on December 21, 1942 in Memphis Tennessee. She has been nicknamed The Queen of Memphis Soul. She had success in the business while very young, with song such as “Gee Whiz (Look At His Eyes).” She is from an accomplished musical family, as she is the daughter of Rufus Thomas (e.g., “Walking the Dog,” “Do the Funky Chicken”), an R&B, funk, soul, and blues singer/songwriters, dancer, DJ, and entertainer. He recorded for the Satellite label, which became Stax Records. Carla’s siblings Marvell and Vaneese carry on the family musical tradition as well.

Here are the lyrics to “B-A-B-Y” by Carla Thomas:

Baby, ooh baby
I love to call you baby
Baby, oh oh baby
I love for you to call me baby

When you squeeze me real tight
You make wrong things right
And I can’t stop loving you
And I won’t stop calling you

Baby, oh baby
You look so good to me baby
Baby, ooh baby
You are so good to me baby
Just one look in your eye
And my temperature goes sky-high
I live for you and can’t help it
You know I really don’t want to help it

B.A.B.Y. baby
B.A.B.Y. baby

Whenever the sun don’t shine
You go out to light my hind
Then I get real close to you
And your sweet kisses see me through

I said baby, ooh baby
You look so good to me baby
Baby, ooh baby
How I love for you to call me baby
When you squeeze me real tight
You know you make wrong things right
And I can’t stop loving you And I won’t stop calling you

B.A.B.Y. baby…

For another song by Carla Thomas: “Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes).”
